A reaction from applying sunscreen can turn an adventure-filled summer’s day into an uncomfortable and unpleasant one. Knowing what ingredients are in the product you’re buying and how your skin will react to it is an important aspect when deciding on a sunscreen that is right for your sensitive skin. Here are some quick guidelines to help you avoid choosing the wrong sunscreen.

Look for physical blocking sunscreens

There are two ways sunscreens protect us from the sun’s rays: chemical blockers and physical blockers. Chemical blockers absorb the harmful rays of the sun and converts them into heat, whereas physical blockers (i.e. mineral sunscreens), reflect the rays away from the skin. For individuals with sensitive skin, chemical blockers have a tendency to cause inflammation and irritation. That’s why it’s a good idea to look for physical blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide when you are purchasing sunscreen.

Say no to perfume

Perfume can cause irritation to sensitive skin, especially when you’re exposed to the sun. It’s important to look for products labeled as “fragrance-free” to avoid any unnecessary uncomfortable reactions.

Try using a different sunscreen on your face and body

Compared to the rest of the body, the face is typically more sensitive, which is why it is a good idea to use separate face and body sunscreens. Unlike some adult formulated sunscreens, child/baby sunscreens usually only use physical blockers, which can be a good option for individuals who have sensitive skin.

Although you can never been 100 percent sure that a sunscreen won’t cause you a reaction, following these guidelines can help reduce the chances. It is important to listen to your body and pick a sunscreen that works for you and your needs.
