Sugar free fizzy mint lemonade recipe
This summer has been seriously HOT! Not something we’re really used to here in Vancouver. In our attempts to keep cool, we’ve been drinking a lot of these refreshing bevvies in the past few weeks.
I’ve been trying to avoid sugar as much as possible, so homemade lemonades are a key to success as most of the store-bought kinds are loaded with sugar.
Ingredients
- fresh lemon
- fresh mint
- soda water
- optional: ice
- optional: straws/stir sticks
Equipment
- glass pint jar or pitcher if you’re making a big batch
- optional: muddler
The Process
STEP 1: wash your mint and your lemons
STEP 2: cut a couple of thin slices of lemon (go thicker if you like your lemonade with a bit more zip)
STEP 3: place your lemon slices in the bottom of your glass with a couple sprigs of fresh mint, and muddle. For those of you not familiar with muddling, you’re basically just squishing up the fruit (gently now!) and the mint a little bit to release the flavours. Don’t smash it though, be gentle or you’ll get too much bitter taste from the lemon rind. If you don’t have an actual muddler, you can use the back side of a spoon or a potato masher if you’re using a big jug to make it in.
STEP 4: if you like your drinks icy cold, then add a couple/few ice cubes.
STEP 5: pour in as much soda water as you need to fill the glass.
STEP 6: if you like it a little sweeter, you can use liquid vanilla, lemon, or plain stevia to sweeten. Start off with just a couple of drops. It doesn’t take much.
