Is it time for you to invest in a new pillow?

I just recently changed mine, and I have to say I would highly recommend this. Standing in front of a wall of pillow options was a bit overwhelming, but it was really interesting to actually stop and think about how I sleep, and what might work the best for me.

Also interesting, was that I was buying a new pillow for my husband too, and he ended up with a completely different one as we don’t sleep the same way. It got me wondering, how many people are sleeping on the wrong kind of pillow for their sleeping styles because their partner was the one who bought them and they just got two the same?

How often should you get a new pillow?

Most experts recommend every 6 months to 2 years but that varies depending on what quality of pillow you purchase, how often you clean it, and what kind of pillow coverings you use. Here’s a fairly specific set of guidelines from the Huff Post. It’s not so much about the pillow wearing out as it is about the buildup of sketchy critters and bacteria that live in your pillow (ICK!).

What kind of a new pillow should you get?

Whatever feels good to you, but check the packaging / product information and try to match the type of pillow to your sleeping style. If you sleep on your stomach, you’ll probably want a thinner pillow. Same with back sleepers, not too fat is good. Side sleepers will benefit from a little more support so a little fatter is good. I found this article to have a good general guide about sleeping types and kind of pillows.

How long will it take to adjust to the new pillow?

I think for most people (especially if you pick one that matches your sleeping style), you should be fully adjusted within 3–5 nights. I slept great from sleep 1, but that will really depend on you.

What kinds of benefits have I seen from getting a new pillow?

I’m less stuffed up in the mornings. I don’t have neck/lower back pain. I’m getting better sleep overall. And I bought a new pillowcase so it just feels nice on my face, which makes waking up on it just that much nicer.

Of all the purchases you might might this month, this is one your guaranteed to get a HECK of a lot of use out of. You’re worth it. And so is your sleep.
