Sometimes it feels as though my world revolves around my phone. I check my email and social media accounts first thing in the morning — sometimes from bed. Work reminders and alerts are sounding constantly throughout the day. I’ve always got it handy to capture whatever adorable/crazy thing my daughter is doing. And it provides the soundtrack for my every drive, dog walk, and workout.

Second to coffee, my phone is what gets me through the day. And while being so digitally connected and engaged can be incredibly convenient — not to mention necessary for most of us for work — it’s starting to get a little scary.

When was the last time I played, totally in the moment with my kid, as opposed to watching her through the camera screen? Would I have been able to turn my brain off and fall asleep easier last night if I hadn’t read that last email? I have a strict no-phones policy at the dinner table rule, but shouldn’t that apply to breakfast and lunch too?

I’m starting to realize I can, and should, live without my phone. Well, for a short period of time every day at least. I’m making a serious effort to put my phone down and walk away for 30 minutes of daily tech-free time. Here are a few tips to help you do the same…

Turn off anything and everything electronic

I’m talking your phone, TV, computer, radio, iPad. If it didn’t exist in the dark ages, turn it off! Do your best to shut down anything that could lure you back to technology. Added bonus: Powering your phone down completely helps improve its battery life and prevents wear and tear.

Schedule it

Add tech-free time to your calendar and be strict with yourself. Treat it like a work meeting or doctor’s appointment. It’s essential, important, and something that can’t be skipped. Try to schedule your break for the same time every day. Consistency will help make it a habit and routine part of your day.

Plan something fun for your break

Read a book, play with your kids, or take a nap! This could be your chance to head outside for a breath of fresh air and a quick walk. Or maybe you’d prefer to relax with a cup of tea and your thoughts. Whatever floats your boat. Distract yourself and make your tech-free time something to look forward to by planning something you’ll enjoy.
