As the temperatures rise on summer days, swimming becomes a popular recreational activity, or a fun form of exercise to get relief from the heat. To keep activities around the water fun and carefree — so that your time with your loved ones is uninterrupted by injuries — swimming lessons are essential for kids — and adults!

Parents AND children need to know how to swim

As a parent, if you don’t know how to swim, it is always a good idea to take swimming lessons to at least learn the basics. After all, if you do not know how to swim, who’s going to jump in after your kids in case of emergency? It’s recommended that children over the age of four should learn to swim. For those who are younger, parented swimming lessons are offered at most public pools and are a great option.

Supervision is still important

Please keep in mind that children who know how to swim should still be supervised when around water. Keep a close watch to all kids when you’re at the lake, beach, or pool, regardless of their swimming skills.

Especially for infants, toddlers and weak swimmers, actively watching is best supplemented with touch supervision. Meaning a physically capable adult is actually sitting at the pool edge or in the water and is within an arm’s reach of the child at all times.

Choosing the right swimming lessons

When choosing a swimming lesson for your child, the time and location that works best for you is always a factor. Other things to consider are water temperature, changing room size, opening hours, and how busy it will be. It is always wise to scout out a new swimming pool ahead of time to avoid any unexpected surprises on the first day of class.

There are a variety of swimming lessons to choose from offered by the Red Cross, YMCA, and most community centres and public pools. Your child may only respond to certain types of methods of teaching, therefore doing a little bit of research can help you find the best fit for them.
