Older millennials, younger millennials and whatever you want to call those of us born in the late late 70’s and early 80’s are known for cutting the cords on our TVs. Everyone seems to have Netflix. Far fewer people have Hulu, Amazon Prime, or my personal fav HBO Now.
But what happens when you just want to turn on your TV? What happens when you don’t want to search through endless options? Sometimes you just want to have a show on while you tweet about…Broadcast TV is the perfect option for those of us who get overwhelmed by lots of options. Except you’ve cut the cord. A digital antenna solves this problem.
These aren’t the antenna’s from your childhood. Oh the days of my dad moving the antenna around to get better reception. Digital Antenna gives you all your local broadcast stations. If you live in a larger city, you might get 15–20 channels depending on the quality of your antenna or where you place it in your home. You can get one at Best Buy or order it online. Of course, the more expensive the antenna the better. It’s a one time payment unlike those ongoing streaming services.
Once you have a digital antenna what do you watch? Here are a few of my favorite shows from regular ole’ broadcast television.
Nature on PBS. This is my favorite comfort television. Nature is on Wednesday nights on PBS where I live. If you are in to documents you can find non-Nature features on PBS, too. I’ve been lucky enough to catch the Hamilton document, The Wrecking Crew, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor.
American Ninja Warrior — Seriously, how could you not like this show! It features athletes and average joes/janes alike running a crazy difficult obstacle course. Throw in some heart warming back stories and I’m hooked. It airs on NBC.
NCIS LA — This recommendation comes from my Mom. It’s one of those shows that always seems to be on. I never know what’s happening. The good guys who include LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell are chasing bad guys. It perfect to watch while you scroll through Instagram.
Masterpiece Theater on PBS — Masterpiece features dramas adapted from classic and contemporary writers. This summer it’s be airing Poldark a period drama based on the novels of the same title by Winston Graham and starring Aidan Turner in the lead role.Coming up in September the three-part thriller, The Miniaturist, airs.
Local News — 24 hour Cable News can be great for staying up to date on the latest tweetstorm, political scandal, or shooting. Cable News is not so great for filling you in on what is happening in your local area. It’s a lot of city hall, consumer advocacy reports, local sports and weather. My friend’s brother was once on local News because his library card got stolen. The thief racked up $2000 worth of late fees on DVDs. The library wouldn’t absolve the fines until the local News featured the story.
**Bonus Pick: How could I not add Jeopardy! Jeopardy is one of the few shows out there that it is very difficult to find online! You can get via Hulu on ABC. If you’re Canadian, it does stream on YES TV. Other than that if you’ve cut the cord but still need your quiz show fix a Digital Antenna is one of your best bets.
