The adventures of a cosplay couple
For a myriad of reasons this Winter has been pretty tough on me. Things haven’t been made better by the inundation of self-righteous preaching that often overwhelms my social media accounts. There have been days when I’ve wanted to mute all my social media contacts, both progressive and other, crawl into bed and wait for the sun to come out for more than a couple days.
While in one such rut recently I found myself searching for people and personalities who, through simply being themselves put a smile on my face. That search led me to the Cosplay Parents.
Who are the Cosplay Parents?
Retired couple Steven and Milli Tani started to cosplay after being introduced to it through their daughter. In an article written about their exploits as cosplayers on the Mashable website in 2017, they explain that they never expected to make cosplay a hobby, but after their first event they were hooked.
Their first costume was dressing up as Carl and Ellie from UP. Since then they’ve been characters from Mary Poppins, Dr Who, and other films. Milli sews many of their costumes which use clothes from their personal wardrobes and the occasional visit to thrift shops.
After reading such a cool story, I wondered if Steven and Milli were still active. Happily they are! They’ve added an Instagram account so their fans can follow their adventures and have a look at their newest outfits. Also, their Facebook fan page looks like a positive, encouraging environment for those interested in cosplay, but needing encouragement to break out of their shell. There, I found an old post that they shared from Cosplayer Misa on Wheels (another person worth a follow)
A great line from Misa’s post is, “Do not be afraid if you look nothing like your character. You bring that character to life just by being yourself.”
Steven and Milli Tani do bring the characters that inspire them to life. But also, through hours of sewing, thrift store adventures and sharing their creations with us, in a small way, they help those of us who have suffered through the Winter/Spring blahs warm up a little.
