Remote working opportunities are becoming increasingly prevalent. But it can still be difficult to acquire a dream job that allows you the freedom to work from anywhere. Inquiring minds want to know, how exactly do you get your boss on board with remote work?

WYCO member, Olivia Porter, knew for a long time that she wanted to travel, and in order to do so she needed to nail down a remote job.

Going From Tech Dreams To A Career Reality

Olivia started out by teaching herself to code. With a goal, a plan, and extreme dedication, she worked her way up to become a top tier software developer. Now she’s traveling around the world with WYCO and living out her big dream.

We sat down with Olivia to find out exactly how the whole process went down for her.

Tips For Getting Your Boss On Board:

  1. Know your value. Start by having a conversation with yourself. If you don’t think that you’re doing well at work, or that your boss doesn’t need you, then don’t bother asking. You need to be able to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself — What is my value? Am I an asset to this company? Am I a good worker? If the answer is YES, then proceed to tip 2.
  2. Prove it. Prove to your company that you’re not only capable of doing it, but that you’re going to thrive working remotely. For example, for three months, I worked from home every Friday. And every Friday I proved that I was capable of getting my work done.
  3. Kick ass. Show your company not only that you can you work remotely, but that you’re better at working remotely than you are in the office. Prove that this is a lifestyle that you can do forever.
