Not Your Average Work Day — Dvir Hazout
We travel the world with a dynamic coworking community of entrepreneurs, business leaders, innovators, thinkers, and creators. Professionals who want to further their careers without missing out on the great experiences of life. Quite often, our friends and followers reach out to us to ask what it’s really like to work while traveling the world? AKA — might this ideal concept and work abroad opportunity be too good to be true?
Don’t get me wrong, the lifestyle is dreamy. Travel to a different destination each month, experience new and energizing cultures, meet local people, share ideas, create powerful products, and dream up wild inventions… The list goes on. But the fact of the matter is, we are all professionals, which means we have jobs, deadlines and projects that we’re held accountable to. Our Roamers are pros at putting in the hours to get their work done AND exploring all the beautiful places around the world.
Each of us has a different approach to their daily grind, so we came up with a series called — “Not Your Average Workday” to share day in the life stories from our Roamers to give you a better feel for what it’s really like to travel and work around the world with us. I had the pleasure of following around Dvir Hazout, one of our Polaris Roamers to see what his work-life is really like. We take you through the bright and beautiful town of Split, Croatia to show you #RoamerLife through the lens of Dvir. Come along with us!

Before we get started… a little info about Dvir, who is on his seventh month with We Roam…
Where are you from? Where is your work based?
I was originally born and raised in the northern part of Israel in a small city named Kiryat Motzkin, near Haifa. In 2016 I moved to the center of Israel, to Ramat Gan which is a suburb five minutes from Tel Aviv. What do you do for a living?
In my current job at Kaltura, a global software company powering video experience, I work as a front end software developer. Why did you choose We Roam?
In the end, it was a positive gut feeling. I had a great talk with both founders, Nathan and Sean. Between the great warm weather itinerary, manageable group size, and a program with a strong focus on professional development, it made me feel that it was worth a shot. Every aspect of We Roam won over the other options I was considering.
9:30AM — BREAKFAST
I met Dvir at his apartment, located a quick 8-minute walk from Old Town Split, on a quaint street in a beautiful residential area. Although he’s a software developer by day, I swear he could be an award-winning chef on the side. He prepared the most delicious Shakshuka breakfast, a typical Israeli dish. He went through some morning emails in the kitchen of his apartment, and we chatted about some of the new projects he’s working on, his favorite destination of the journey thus far (his answer: too tough to choose!), and his plans for a side trip with some Roamer buddies to show them his Israeli stomping grounds in the future.

11:00AM — ARRIVE AT COWORKING SPACE FOR WORK
We left the apartment and headed to the We Roam coworking space in Split, Co-Creative Coworking, just a 10-minute walk from his apartment. Dvir’s job is project based, so his hours at the office can be flexible. He typically works between 11:00 AM — 5:00 PM on various projects with Kaltura, and develops some of his own ideas during his spare time.

What current projects are you working on?
In my job at Kaltura, I’m working on two products — the first is refactoring the company’s core product which is a cross platform video player. I joined this project a month ago and I’m helping the team kick-off the product. The second and main product I work on at Kaltura is similar to a flexible Netflix white-label platform to stream VOD and linear channels in all platforms — web, iOS, Android and TV apps.Outside of Kaltura, I develop my own ideas. One of them is an interactive way of logging this year’s memories based on my social media profiles.
Dvir first introduced this concept at a We Roam Shark Tank professional development event, where Roamers have the chance to pitch new and entrepreneurial ideas. We were all in favor! Such a great potential way to track memories made on our We Roam adventure.

2:00PM — LUNCH
We headed to a local lunch spot right on the water with a fellow Roamer and friend, Fernanda. There’s nothing like a lunch break on the banks of the Adriatic Sea. A pinch yourself reminder that… no, this isn’t vacation, it’s just everyday #RoamerLife. We enjoyed delicious sandwiches and the three of us had the chance to share stories about each of our homes. In this particular case, “home” spans the farthest corners of the globe. Each of us are from a different continent. Pretty cool that an Israeli, a Brazilian, and a Canadian can share interesting conversation over great food and wide-open ocean views.

After lunch, we headed back to the office to work for the rest of the afternoon.
How has travel helped advance your career?
Starting in February when I joined We Roam, I immediately felt that working while traveling brought something new to my work. Something unique that makes me more creative. One prime example that has proven this: I participated in a music “Hackathon” in Berlin last month while we were based there. I had an idea for a new product, developed it in 24 hours, pitched it at the event, won a sponsor prize and forged professional connections that have already propelled my career forward, in new directions I never thought possible. I attribute a big part of that achievement to my new lifestyle of travel & work with We Roam.
7:00 PM — DINNER
Even though Dvir is a master in the kitchen, the restaurant scene in Split is not to be missed! He met up with some Roamers in Old Town for a local bite and to discuss plans for an upcoming excursion to swim and snorkel in the Blue Cave.

8:30PM — EVENING RUN
After dinner, I met Dvir outside his place for a run along the forest path, with panoramic views of the sunset over the Adriatic Sea. Staying healthy and maintaining an exercise routine while traveling can be a challenge, but Dvir always finds scenic running paths or organizes pick-up soccer games with fellow Roamers to keep at it. He considers running, walking, or biking all fun ways to get a lay of the land in the cities we travel to.

We headed home to our apartments under the clear night sky. Another productive, fun, and active day in our Roam Home on the Dalmatian Coast.
One piece of advice for someone in your field who might want to take part in the We Roam experience?
Skip the ideas of thinking that working remotely only means people working on laptops on the beach or while on top of a mountain. Work your flexible hours in the coworking offices that We Roam provides. You’ll get the work done, you’ll be productive. Then, you’ll have the time to travel and explore the cities to the fullest.

So, there you have it. A day in the life of Polaris Roamer, Dvir!
This may not be your average work day, but it could be…
