Eric de Dormael, the designer behind Ombre Portée, has a way with light and fine metals (especially brass). Based in Paris, his pieces venture well beyond lighting, into the sculptural realm — and he doesn’t shy away from experimentation. Playing with geometry and ellipses, he gracefully composes a symphony of soft light and shadows, always tailoring the design to seamlessly exist in the space in which it will live, as if it were a part of the architecture. His designs can be found on display in the Grand Palais, or winding across the ceiling of the French Embassy in Buenos Aires. Q: What’s unique about your work?
Ombre Portée has more than 20 years experience in custom made monumental lightings. We design and manufacture our lamps in Paris, France.
In 2020 we decided to launch small and medium series of some of our designs to offer a wider range of products.
Q: What do you want people to do or feel when they encounter your creations?
Ombre Portée can be translated to Cast Shadow. More than lighting fixtures, we create unique poetic pieces that use light as a medium to design shadows.
Q: What is your favorite material to work with?
We are affectionate towards brass, as it is a noble material that allows endless possibilities. And its colors resonate nicely with the light.
Q: How do your pieces come to life? Tell us one interesting thing about your process?
Light is the key ingredient to our designs. It is the light that brings our pieces to life.
