South Asian Film Spotlighted at Jeanine Basinger Center for Film Studies
This fall, The College of Film and Moving Image began hosting events and an exhibition highlighting South Asian Film at Wesleyan’s Jeanine Basinger Center for Film Studies. Programmed by Anuja Jain, Assistant Professor in the College of Film, the fun kicked off on October 12, 2022 with the opening of the “Bollywood and Beyond” exhibition at The Rick Nicita Gallery located near the entrance of the Basinger Center.
The opening coincided with the start of a South Asian Film Series, including showings of Monsoon Wedding (2001), Taare Zameen Par (2007), and Writing With Fire (2021). Concluding with Mississippi Masala (1991) on November 16th, the Film Series has since ended, but the exhibit at the Rick Nicita Gallery remains on display!
As Professor Jain writes in the statement for “Bollywood and Beyond,” the posters and booklets are fragments of the rich history of the Indian feature film industry as well as artifacts of the industry’s consumption in popular culture. “Where do we look,” Jain asks, “and what do we consume?” Furthermore, this exhibit asks “what pleasures are these paratexts promising to the passerby?” Come by and find out. “Bollywood and Beyond” is open on Fridays from 12:30–3:30pm at the Rick Nicita Gallery.
