Premier League player of the week: Emre Can
Emre Can’s incredible goal against Watford on Monday night was the moment of magic in a rather drab game. With United and City dropping points the day before, Liverpool went into the game knowing they had to win and that was a goal worthy of winning any football game.
Liverpool controlled most of the game and a lot of credit has to go to Emre Can for his display in the midfield. Before he scored his superb goal, he had been a driving force of the team for all of the first half. The link up play between himself and Adam Lallana was the key in transitioning from defense to attack.
Can’s goal and performance on the night show exactly the kind of player he is, always energetic, and as such at the forefront of the press. He breaks up the opposition’s play a lot and his positioning when Liverpool are on the defense is great. His passing range and accuracy (although not the best in the team) are high enough to create good goal scoring chances for his teammates. In the 75th minute of the game , Liverpool broke on the counter after a Watford corner and Emre Can starts sprinting down the right. As soon as he receives the ball from Origi, he threads an inch perfect pass for Lallana, creating a goal scoring chance that should have killed off the game.
Can’s all round play on the night was exceptional and makes me think he might be Liverpool’s diamond in the rough. His superb overhead kick which is a strong contender for the goal of the season could be the turning point in his Liverpool career. He is the kind of player every manager likes to have, a workhorse who plays for the team and does as he is told. The celebration with Klopp showed that there is definitely a bond between the two.
Stunning, spectacular and brilliant, were some of the words used to describe Can’s goal on Monday night against Watford. If he keeps on performing like he did, those might be the adjectives we start using to describe him as a player.
We are going to spend the rest of the week talking about how incredible that goal was and Emre Can definitely deserves all the plaudits. With Couthino out injured, this sort of performance from Can might just be what Liverpool need to finish in the top four.
