“Let’s go to the biodome, go check on the crops.”

An image of the set up for the overly-ambitious Biosphere-2

The whole idea of a mission to Mars involves getting people to be able to survive adequate on the planet itself. Since there isn’t a lot of oxygen there, the first idea most scientists have is to set up domes where oxygen can be stored more safely. Of course, technologically this works like a charm — however, from more research, this might not be the case.

The Backstory:

This story starts back in the early 1990s, in Arizona. The plans for a series of connected biodomes to sustain an environment entirely within the glass were drawn up. Here, it was decided to store several varieties of plants, several animals, and a couple people in the biosphere for two years, only taking them out if there was some true reason they needed to come out. In a quick rundown of what went inside, here’s the summary:

  • Food, in the form of beets, papayas, bananas, sweet potatoes, peanuts was inside the biosphere. This was all decided by Roy Walford, the nutritionist/doctor.
  • Animals, like hens, goats, and a rooster. The goals was to have enough to sustain agriculture, but also potentially serve as food if necessary.
  • Eight residents, four men and four women. These people would have to be able to…
