According to Dr. Yu-Han Chang, the Technology Analyst for 5G at IDTechEX, “5G enables greater data flows and quicker data collecting, allowing AI to generate more accurate models and predictions.” In just a decade, the realm of artificial intelligence has launched innumerable leaps and breakthroughs in our society. But for advanced AI applications to be deployed pervasively, they require a connection to a network capable of incredibly rapid data transmission. This is where 5G networks come into play.

When 5G and AI come together, they create synergy. AI advancements can help improve 5G system efficiencies while 5G networks drive artificial intelligence with advanced inference.

5G and AI transforming the intelligent edge

Edge computing is a distributed framework that brings data storage and processing closer to the source of data, which allows processing to happen at greater speeds and volumes. It is speculated that edge computing will provide an optimal environment to create multiple 5G applications.

The anticipated link between 5G and AI is expected to enhance technological applications in each economic sector. The partnership of 5G and AI improves Edge AI models that help combine historical data, weather patterns, data security, etc. In the healthcare industry, using 5G networks will enable doctors to better perform remote surgeries with the help of AI-powered robots, uplifting healthcare’s efficiency. The dream of AI-powered autonomous vehicles can be brought to life with the help of 5G networks. These vehicles need very fast and reliable connections to communicate with the infrastructure around them; this is where 5G comes into play. The 5G-AI collaboration expands out to the plan of smart cities. For example, sensors in cars that detect traffic and road hazards, when connected with 5G networks, can use this data to calculate optimal routes for vehicles to avoid accidents and ensure on-time arrival much more efficiently.

However, the application of 5G networks in combination with AI in our society is quite costly and the installation and deployment of 5G and deployment are not easy tasks. However, as 5G integrates with AI, there is a positive outlook that this duo will propel society through a technological revolution in the future.
