Significant Snowstorm To Impact The Area Tuesday Into Tuesday Night
Good morning, everyone! Today will be mostly sunny, with thin wispy clouds likely to begin moving into southern zones by sunset. Highs will range from 17 to 33 degrees. Coldest north, warmest south.
Tonight will feature increasing clouds with lows ranging from 7 to 20 degrees. Coldest north, warmest near the coast.
Tuesday morning low pressure will begin rapidly strengthening south of New England before taking a track near Cape Cod and into the Gulf of Maine. Expect snow to move into the area from south to north Tuesday morning. Northern areas may not see snow until early Tuesday afternoon.
Tuesday afternoon snow rates will increase markedly, with many seeing rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour at times during the evening hours. Heaviest snow across southern areas should be between 4 PM and 8 PM, which is actually when the majority of the snow from this system will accumulate. Heavy bands of snow will be common, and driving will be extremely difficult if not impossible.
To make matters worse, winds will gust to 45 miles per hour along the coastline Tuesday evening. While the strongest winds won’t coincide very well with the heaviest snow rates, periods of blizzard or near blizzard conditions are possible along the coast.
Heavy snow will push north after 8 PM Tuesday, with southern areas continuing to see moderate to at times heavy snowfall through 11 PM. Southern areas will see snow mostly clear out by 1 AM or so Wednesday. Northern areas will have to wait till 4 or 5 AM Wednesday to see improvements.
Between 8 PM and 1 AM some rain may mix in along the midcoast, but the majority of the snow will already have fallen at this point. The rain may fall as rain for a brief period of time, but will mostly be in the form of freezing rain.
As far as snowfall totals go, not much has changed. Most of the area can expect a general 14–17 inches. Extremely heavy bands of snow will push southern areas towards 20 inches. The mountains may also see locally higher amounts, but confidence is just a tad too low to include them in that range at this point.
Have a great day and check back this evening for another update.
