The piano player covers were such a big part of the first season of Westworld. We’ve already heard Kanye West’s “Runaway” and Nirvana’s “Heart-shaped Box.”

But we couldn’t wait until Season 2 to hear the next group of songs to be covered in Season 2. So we got the help of the musician behind our podcast theme music, Alex Thompson, to help compose a hypothetical season two soundtrack.

“Into The West” by Annie Lennox

You might recognize this song from the end credits of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Performed by Annie Lennox, this song contributed to the film’s 11 Academy Awards winning best original song. The title alone is enough to merit consideration. And it has a very quest-like tone.

“Hurt” by Johnny Cash

Originally composed by Trent Reznor, “Hurt” has since become associated with Johnny Cash. Even without lyrics, you can still feel the hurt. And with suffering being such a key element of the Host experience, I couldn’t think of a better song.

“Rolling in the Deep” by Adele

“Rolling in the Deep” is one of Adele’s more famous songs. When it’s in player piano form, it sounds just like something you’d hear in a saloon.

“Jolene” by Dolly Parton

It’s hard to think of a better country and western song than “Jolene” by Dolly Parton. It’s been covered far more than any of her other songs. It would be only fitting to be covered for this show.

“Chandelier” by Sia

“Chandelier” by Sia goes from a pop song (that you belt out in your car) to a beautiful, tender ballad. We could easily see this playing before, during, or after a heart-breaking scene.

“Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce

This one might be my personal favorite. “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce is another song that pulls at the heart strings. It sounds so good in this style. Dare I say better than the original?

“Mad World” by Gary Jules

Originally a Tears for Fears song, “Mad World” took on new life when it was covered by Gary Jules. We heard a rumor that this was the temp music used for the show’s intro before Ramin Djawadi wrote the theme song. And it certainly works with the insane environment of Westworld.

“Idioteque” by Radiohead

Radiohead made quite a few appearances in the first season in Season 1. But “Idioteque” was absent. It might be fun if at least one Radiohead song makes it into each season going forward.

“Send in the Clowns” by Stephen Sondheim

“Send in the Clowns” was written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music. It’s a song about disappointment and regret, which could apply to both hosts and guests.

“Say a Little Prayer” by Burt Bacharach and Hal David

We wanted to end with a more upbeat song. “Say a Little Prayer” was originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick. It’s a bit more fun reflects the point that although Westworld is a very serious show, it doesn’t have some wonderful moments of levity.
