Moonraker Yang Self-reflective di ‘Fail Better’
Ada sesuatu di melodic pop-punk yang selalu khas, yakni tema-tema failure dan twenty-somethings everyday angst. Tradisi sensibilitas self-reflective tersebut begitu kuat ketika mendengar nama Moonraker yang baru merilis debut LP Fail Better.
Dalam musiknya, trio asal Santa Clarita, California ini bermain dalam tempo cepat dengan gaya NOFX namun lirik sepadat No Use For A Name.
Semua lirik album Fail Better rasanya bersandar para konflik kemampuan diri yang frustatif, dalam kurung perasaan mediokritas. Tidak heran, faktanya sejumlah line terdengar seperti potongan-potongan isi kepala Bojack Horseman yang berbicara di depan cermin.
“I wish I was actually good at the couple things I’m actually good at,” di track ‘The Horse I Rode In On’. “No parades, no accolades when your teammates have gold medals and you’re struggling for third place,” timpal mereka di nomor ‘Bronze Boys’.
Emotional cynicism juga bisa terasa. Ambil contoh di track ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, “I’m making everyone uncomfortable, so now they feel the same as me.” “I’ve got 99 first-world problems, and I’ll bitch about every one,” lanjut di track ‘Wax Bath’.
Fail Better memang menjadi karya dari individu yang menginginkan damai dengan diri sendiri serta penilaian orang lain atas kemampuan yang dimiliki. Seolah-olah album ini memiliki satu pesan, tetap jadi diri sendiri sehingga mampu lepas dari beban ekspektasi.
“Maybe your actions don’t need to be defended. Maybe you don’t need to prove anything. Maybe you don’t need to be jealous. Maybe your reflection doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Maybe it’s fine that we’re not the golden boys, ’cause we’re the bronze boys. ’Cause when you land on your feet, you break both your ankles and when you’re not under the microscope, no one can see you sweating,” statement David Green, drummer Moonraker, dikutip dari New Noise Magazine.
Sisi positif itu bisa didapat ketika mendengar and ‘The Hearse I Rode Out In’ menutup album Moonraker. Track ini juga menyimpulkan bagaimana mereka ingin membagikan momen katarsis.
