3D Modeling: Existence of 3D characters
Do you find yourself fascinated by the 3D characters that you watch in sci-fi movies, video games, and animations? Well, if its a yes from your end, then, you have landed in the right place!
This article is about the technology behind the functioning of these 3D characters, which is the 3D modeling, its types, and the technique behind it.
What is 3D Modeling?
3D modeling is the mathematical representation of a three-dimensional object using software like Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, and AutoCAD. By the use of software, we create a virtual three-dimensional model of an object.
Where are 3D models used?
3D models are primarily used in:-
- The animated film industry for the creation of animated characters.
- Video games for 3D gaming characters.
- Medical industry for 3D models of human body organs.
- Visualize architectural designs.
- Representation of vehicle designs.
Types of 3D models
Based on the process involved in creating 3D models, it is divided into two different categories, which are as discussed below:-
- NURB modeling
- Polygonal modeling
NURB Modeling
Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline (NURB) modeling is the mathematical representation of those elements of an object which are used for representing curves and surfaces.
This modeling technique is responsible for giving high precision and greater flexibility at the same time.
Polygonal modeling
Polygonal modeling uses polygons to create a shell of a 3D model, that’s the reason why it is also called shell modeling. It is primarily used to create simple shapes like cubes, quads, and triangles, which are all basis for a complex three-dimensional polygonal model
Aspects of 3D modeling
There are basically two important aspects of 3D modeling which are as discussed below:-
Textures
In order to improve the visual appearance of a 3D model, the texturing technique is used. This technique involves overlaying a two-dimensional image over the surface of a 3D model.
Shaders
Shaders are primarily used to improve the lighting effects of a 3D model. It accounts for reflectivity, opacity and shading offer 3D model.
Software used for 3D modeling
There are some prominent software which is used for the 3D modeling, these are namely:-
- Modo
- ZBrush
- Houdini
- Cinema 4D
- Rhinoceros
- Autodesk Maya
- Autodesk Mudbox
- Autodesk 3Ds Max
Expert’s view
“3D modeling has changed the way we design; for the better. Not only does 3D modeling help the designers and end-users visualize space requirements, but it also improves drawing efficiency and accuracy.”
- Tim Jacobs, Senior Designer
“3D modeling enables you to create photorealistic illustrations and mockups that are compelling to clients, as well as expand your skillset to craft blueprints for product and environmental designs.”
-Rebecca Creger, 3-D Art Designer
All in all, 3D modeling is a vast subject to explore and there are several aspects that are to be taken into account for creating perfect three-dimensional models. Furthermore, looking over the future aspects, it can be realized that 3D modeling will find more applications other than gaming, healthcare, research, and designing.
