Do you find yourself fascinated by the 3D characters you watch in sci-fi movies, video games, and animations? Well, if yes, then, you have landed in the right place!

3D Modelling and 3D printing are rapidly taking recognition in the market.

3D MODELING: RENDERING DEFINITION

3D modeling is the process of creating a three-dimensional representation of an object. The market of 3D modeling is vast in areas like film, gaming, interior design, architecture, and animation.

It is used to create a mathematical representation of 3D models. There are two major ways of modeling. First, Quad modeling works on quadrilateral figures. This modeling gives a better and enhanced figure. Second, triangulate quad modeling works on triangle-figures. Quad modeling converts into triangulation modeling when used in games or transferred to unity.

3D MODELING PROCESS

3D modeling is also understood as a type of modeling. The most common and used types are:

NURBS (NON-UNIFORM RATIONAL B-SPLINE) MODELING

NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline) is the most common type of 3D modeling. NURB modeling is the mathematical representation of those elements of an object which are used for representing curves and surfaces. This modeling gained recognition due to its ease of master and handle.

In this modeling, surfaces are defined by curves, which are influenced by weighted control points. These shapes are then twisted and curved to give the required shape. This modeling technique is responsible for giving high precision and greater flexibility at the same time.

POLYGONAL MODELING

Polygonal modeling uses polygons to create a shell of a 3D model, thus it is also called shell modeling. It is primarily used to create simple shapes like cubes, sphere, plane cylinder, cone, pyramid, prism, and the like which are all basis for a complex three-dimensional polygonal model.

This type of modeling is used for situations where the shape of the final output resembles the other polygon. It needs a good working knowledge of polygonal mesh theory to operate.

DIGITAL SCULPTING

Unlike traditional sculpting, digital sculpting is done on screens and computers. It is used to create high-detailed three-dimensional models. Rather than clay and limited equipment, the artist works on 3D mesh and digital tools.

An artist can refine three-dimensional models with the help of digital sculpting. It gives you an ample amount of brushes options where one can create textures of textiles, stones, marbles, etc. The undo feature in digital sculpting also helps in altering the desired final output.

TYPES OF 3D MODEL

Organic 3D Model

Organic 3D models include living organisms. Modeling of an organic 3D model is performed to create characters and creatures. It includes all the real-world things. Organic modeling generally works on subjects that are curvy and dynamic in nature.

Inorganic 3D Model

Inorganic 3D models include non-living organisms. Modeling on the inorganic 3D model is performed to create objects or architectural features. Inorganic modeling usually works on sharp-edged objects which are hard-surface in nature.

EXPERT’S VIEWS

The speed and flexibility that 3D printing enables is a useful tool that can facilitate first-to-market opportunities and validation of larger production demand.

- Carl Dekker, president of Met-L-Flo Inc.

We are currently working on a more powerful modeling tool to determine how -one can generate a phase mask to produce a desired 3D structure. With this type of tool, we will be able to more fully exploit the power of this patterning approach.

- John Rogers, creator of Jackie Chan Adventures

CONCLUSION

3D modeling is a vast subject to explore and there are several aspects that are taken into account for creating perfect three-dimensional models. There is software like Maya, Lightwave, Modo, Cinema 4d, 3Ds Max, and many more which help in performing 3D modeling.

Moreover, 3D modeling is expanding its application in fields like gaming, healthcare, research, and design. It is becoming one of the crucial elements in digital media designing. The exploring and consistently developing technique potentially prove its advantageous use in many areas.

Compelling. Isn’t it?
