If you thought falling in love was hard, staying in love is even harder. It requires a whole new level of commitment, understanding, and patience.

I consider myself one of the lucky ones having found a soul mate in my wife of 5 years now. We have never quarreled. We both have a great understanding, and we love each other to bits. Many get it right eventually. Some never do.

In my experience, these 4 qualities play a huge role in making a relationship or marriage last forever.

Are You Hearing Her or Just Listening?

There is a difference between listening and hearing.

Listening to your partner gives them the opportunity and space to express themselves which is very important and helpful. Sometimes people just want to be heard or vent and get things off their chest.

Hearing them is acknowledging the importance of the issue they are bringing up and then taking actionable steps on what you just listened to, so your partner never has to bring it up again. Nothing demonstrates being supportive and understanding that this gesture in my opinion.

Ask yourself would you rather be a shoulder to cry on or a holding hand.

Date Nights Are a Must

Being mindful of the high inflation and the rising costs of practically everything, date nights should still be on the calendar, once a month even, if not every week.

Me and my wife dated for 3 years before we got hitched and we continued to have date nights after we got married. It made the weekends more fun and allowed us to try out new places to eat or explore. However, with the birth of our firstborn, our daily lives changed completely and date nights sort of went on the back burner for the longest time.

We got so preoccupied between work, bills, household errands, and the baby that the only time we were having a conversation was at the dinner table catching up on each other’s day. We concluded that as much as both of us were devoted to our work and the baby, we had to make time for each other as well. So date nights were back on. Adam would get time to spend with his grandparents and we’d get some alone time with each other.

Cover All The Bases

This is important fellas, so pay attention.

You have to buy her gifts for all the important occasions if you want the relationship to last. Think baseball; you have to cover all the bases (occasions) because all four are important.

The three bases are Birthday, Valentine’s Day, and Christmas. For those who don’t celebrate Christmas, you can swap it with New Year.

You might be asking “Elvis, you said to cover all 4 bases. What about the home plate? What occasion is that?” Well, it’s the most important occasion of all.

Anniversary! Duh.

An Activity Just for the Two of You

Date nights are a great outdoor activity. Now find a great indoor activity that you can do together as well. My wife and I would play Scrabble and watch previous episodes of Master Chef. Find a nice TV series and watch it together. Don’t binge-watch. Make an event of it and plan it out. Order some pizza and you call it a perfect evening.
