The pavements gleam from water treatment
and shimmer where my footsteps tread
in springtime when the showers are frequent
as after work I homeward head
beneath my blue umbrella’s shelter
among the multi-coloured welter
that ripples on the sidewalk scene
illumined by the shop-lights’ sheen.
My bus-stop reached, my bus not taken,
because tonight there’s not enough
of pouring rain to make things tough
nor gales to get my brolly shaken;
and so, while cars swish down the street
I ramble home on sloshing feet.
