A quintessential heartbreak song. So simple and so true. You connect with the lyrics as they ring a bell. After listening to it many times you will wonder if it is heartbreak or pure love.

Some people live their dreams
Some people close their eyes
Some people’s destiny
Passes by

Life is unpredictable and everyone approaches it in their unique ways. Every life’s story unfolds slowly, often in unpredictable ways.

There are no guarantees
There are no alibis
That’s how our love must be
Don’t ask why

There are no guarantees — not even in love. An ‘alibi’ is the logic we use to defend ourselves. When some mistakes happen we don’t even seem to find any alibis — we have only ourselves or circumstances to blame.

For the first time poet mentions that in their love some mistakes have happened which cannot be forgiven and there is no alibi (or excuse). The reasons are not simple and more importantly, the reasons don’t matter.

It takes some time
God knows how long
I know that I can forget you

As soon as my heart stops breakin’
Anticipating
As soon as forever is through
I’ll be over you

The poet says that it may take a long time for him to forget her. The next stanza offers more insight. His heart is aching right now. He will be able to forget her (over you) as soon as his heart stops aching. He is anticipating (waiting for) a time when his heartache ends. Then comes a quiet punch — forever — that’s how long it would take!

Remembering times gone by
Promises we once made
What are the reasons why
Nothing stays the same

The words of wisdom — ‘nothing stays the same.’ As life unfolds, circumstances change and people change.

There were the nights holding you close
Someday I’ll try to forget them
Someday I’ll be over you

He still cherishes the good memories of their relationship. However, he is trying to forget but he cannot. He answers that he will forget and that is ‘someday ‘— but that’s forever!
