ACCOUNT DIRECTOR

Who the hell is this job for?

Studio Something. Thatā€™s who.

Studio Something began life as a modest moon shot by Ian Greenhill and Jordan Laird, at the time we were working as juniors in an ad agency in Scotland. We were working on a lot of side projects to keep ourselves amused and excited. The majority of this was writing and directing, and occasionally appearing in, music videos and short films.

We decided to take a punt on starting something, that ā€˜somethingā€™ was Studio Something, you can read a wee bit more about the history here,

(donā€™t look at our site right now, brand new spanker is on the conveyor belt of production and will be live asap)

Since that day we have worked for clients such as Universal Music, Red Bull, Tennentā€™s Lager, SkyScanner, The Scottish Government and Innis & Gunn amongst many others. Weā€™ve also helped a small mental health charity go viral, sent a teacake to space and dumped a billion people.

Where are we now? We have grown now to have a staff of 5, with a small financial backroom staff. We work with a number of clients on both a retained and project basis weā€™ve also begun working with one of the worldā€™s biggest brands but canā€™t say too much about them yet. Shhhhh!

We have moved from our wee tapas restaurant that we turned into an agency to a four floor manse, with a bell tower at the top. Four floors? Yup. One floor to do serious meetings. One floor to house Welbot - What is Welbot?. One for the most interesting freelancers, students and folks in town. Then of course one for us. And maybe you?

We are looking for an ambitious, driven individual with a few years in ā€˜the bizā€™ who can work alongside us full time on a permanent basis to take the company to where we want to go, and where is that?

We want to go to space, win an Oscar and change the world for the better.

Our ambition is to make Studio Something one of the worldā€™s most famous and successful creative studios. We intend to do this by unequivocally prizing creativity, working with humility, wide-eyed wonder, integrity, fun and without industry waffle.

With the mission -

ā€˜Make Something People Genuinely Likeā€™

Five, incredibly simple, words, that we want to guide our company -

ā€˜Makeā€™ ā€” we want to be a company that knows not just how to conceive of ideas but also how to ā€˜makeā€™ them, to see them through, understand why things work, why they fail. We too often saw, in agencies, that they did the ā€˜thinkingā€™ and then when the client ā€˜bought itā€™ they hired in someone else to ā€˜make itā€™. Itā€™s not to say weā€™ll never hire specialists but as a principle we want to know that we can make what we sell. If it all goes to shit and we end up back in the old tapas restaurant with two desks and no clients, we need to know we can make what we sell.

ā€˜Somethingā€™ ā€” For us ā€˜somethingā€™ means ā€˜ideasā€™, we donā€™t want to limit anyone in our company to what they can think up or conceive of, the guy who came up with snowboarding, while watching people ski, just thought ā€˜what if you took one of those skis away?ā€™ and he invented a sport. We want our company to able to come up with world-changing ideas, maybe even a sport. But we also donā€™t want to discredit the smaller things, the ā€˜toolkits we create for charitiesā€™, the tweets that help our clients tell their story. Something can be big. Something can be small, but something HAS to be an idea.

ā€˜Peopleā€™ ā€” this is important to us, ā€˜peopleā€™ to us are our mates who couldnā€™t tell you the first thing about advertising but ā€˜love Paddy Powerā€™, itā€™s our Mum who hasnā€™t heard about ā€˜contentā€™ but will ask ā€˜did you see that Carpool Karaoke?ā€™ itā€™s the taxi driver who asks you what you do and responds ā€˜like those hilarious Irn-Bru ads?ā€™ when you say advertising. We didnā€™t go to art school, our best pals arenā€™t ā€˜ad folkā€™. We have to talk to our pals about real stuff so we want to make stuff for people like them and people like us. People. Not ā€˜audiencesā€™, ā€˜tribesā€™ or ā€˜marketsā€™. People.

ā€˜Genuinely Likeā€™ ā€” To us this goes to the taxi driver, itā€™s easy to get numbers that tell you people ā€˜likedā€™ your work, but thereā€™s another point, when people genuinely like it, not because it was punted into their feed but because it connected with them and they couldnā€™t help but be touched by it. Itā€™s when that taxi driver says ā€˜see that Binder thing on the telly, some dafties made the opposite of Tinderā€™, itā€™s not an ad itā€™s something people genuinely like. You can tell when your work goes past ā€˜likesā€™ and into actually being liked. Thatā€™s what we are striving for.

SOā€¦

We believe that the person who takes this role has the opportunity to help mould a company in what they believe is the right way to do business.

We are of the opinion that the right person will be able to see this not as an opportunity to join a company but build one.

Ready to start something?

We are looking for an ā€˜Account Directorā€™, which we think translates as,the following -

But what will I do?

For legal reasons, weā€™ve got a list of the ā€˜fancy wordsā€™ below to describe what we expect you to do but we thought it was worth trying to put into our own words what we think these responsibilities actually mean -

Designated Driver

In our eyes, itā€™s a steady hand on the wheel, a responsible adult to remind us to eat our greens and answer clientā€™s briefs on time, to have one eye on the parking meter while the kids are on the water slide. We donā€™t need a stick in the mud but we probably occasionally need a stick to the head. Youā€™ll also know when itā€™s time to get on the water slide yourself!

Juggler

We see the link between the agency and the client a bit like that. We will do our best creatively to ensure that the work we produce never gives you any need to take an ear full from the other team and weā€™ll ensure we always hire clients that wouldnā€™t ever think it appropriate to treat you with disdain. We do see the importance though of having that middle ground, it allows the client to get some things off their chest and quietly say ā€˜push those idiots pleaseā€™ and it allows us to focus a bit more on the water slide.

Cheerleader

Weā€™re all busy and of course talking about the company can drop down the list of priorities but we have seen that the more people we tell about the company and stand right behind what we believe in the more the right people come along for the ride. We want someone who can walk into any room in the country and sell what Studio Something stands for, it would also be quite handy if youā€™re welcome in a few inboxes to say ā€˜you should see the new team I am working withā€™

Fire Starter

We are in charge. All of us, thereā€™s no teachers, no parents. Except you a ā€˜weeeeee bitā€™. But, Itā€™s all our thing. We can quite literally do whatever we want, all of us. We want someone who has ideas, plans, dreams, a bit of vision for what a company should look like, how it should act, how it should treat its staff. We are all making this up as we go along so we want someone who is right up for making up something great. Go on a journey with us and be the next great ingredient in an exciting tasty cake of opportunity.
