Yau Veggie Bistro

Taking over tfvsjs.syut in Sai Wan, Yau is a fancy vegetarian restaurant that serves superb vegetarian dishes at a very affordable price. I visited twice with different friends during Christmas time for lunch.

Appetizer — Pasteis de Bacalhau

My first lunch at Yau started with this appetizer of Pasteis de Bacalhau. These freshly deep fried vegetarian Bacalhau were nicely flavoured with potato, onion, parley, sea salt and black olive. We couldn’t stop eating these delicious little mashed balls.

Beef Wellington
Beef Wellington

We came for the Beef Wellington, which has to be pre-ordered two days in advance, so that the restaurant can have enough time to prepare it (fair enough). And this vegetarian Beef Wellington was absolutely delightful! The “beefy” Beyond Meat was quite standard, but what made this dish so good is that Yau really put a lot of effort in perfecting the taste and texture of vegetarian beef. The Yau’s Foie Gras, vegan bacon, mushrooms, black truffle, onion, mustard and egg made the vegetarian beef supremely good! And the puff pastry was roasted perfectly so that it’s crunchy and flakey. Yum! The portion was quite big, and both my friend and I were decently full after finishing this.

Poached Pear in Red Wine

We ordered a vegan dessert to share. Poached pears are usually quite sour due to red wine, but this one was nicely sweetened with an enjoyable red wine flavor. Gorgeous.

There is nothing we didn’t like about the lunch, so I brought another friend to visit it again to try out other dishes.

Foie Gras Saute with Figs and Balsamic Glaze

And the second lunch started with an appetizer of Foie Gras Saute with Figs and Balsamic Glaze. The Yau’s Foie Gras was superb! It tasted really like the real thing! The sweet figs and balsamic vinegar of Modena made fantastic dressing to go with the moist and dense vegetarian foie gras.

Bastilla
Bastilla

We ordered a Bastilla to share. Again, this hearty pie needs to be pre-ordered two days in advance. When it was served, we could smell a nice and strong cinnamon and nutmeg flavour. Cutting up the crunchy and flakey pastry revealed the vegetarian chicken chunks inside, stuffed with ras hanout, saffron, onion, egg, tofu and almond. Every bite was a great pleasure to the tongue. Love this vegetarian Moroccan pie.

Highly recommend Yau Veggie Bistro to you for the hearty healthy vegetarian dishes.
