The studio of the Brieflosshow before filming

You remember the time when you were very young staying with your grandma and watching rather boring TV shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoon? The Brieflosshow is exactly one of them and has been running since 1990 on Austrian television. Paul told me a few months ago that he wants to go and I also applied for tickets — obviously we got two and so we went!

I didn’t know yet that I won’t be part of the quiz…

In case you are not Austrian, let me familiarize you with a Brieflos and the Brieflosshow. A Brieflos is a lottery ticket that grants you an instant price — my highest win ever was 100 ATS, about 7 Euro — or told you that you can go to the Brieflosshow. Of course, this was always the worst prize because you need to mail it in, then be lucky enough to be drawn, be over 16 and it’s still not sure you will win. During the show itself, there are two candidates that can turn the wheel you can see in the background, winning anything from 1.000€ to 100.000€. Furthermore, three of the visitors can play a quiz and win up to 80 Brieflose. Also, there is some target audience-appropriate musical act.

The visit and recording for us was not very spectacular. We got a quick tour through the ORF studios, were not selected for the quiz, then had some orange juice and lastly a beer in the ORF canteen. The recording was very straightforward — lot of clapping, only a single interruption because the moderator, Peter Rapp, forgot to introduce the candidates. Unfortunately, my spot in the audience was very bad (or good?) because you only see us during one section of the show.

If you want to rewatch this week’s Brieflosshow, the episode is on the ORF TVThek. But be warned it’s awful and really not aimed at under-70 year old people.
