This week’s Loop of the Week features the work of 31-year old Charly Derouet, a French photographer. Charly currently lives in Paris and was born and raised in Normandy, in the north of France. With a naturally inquisitive personality, he claims he’s not very good at sitting still — always wanting to learn and do more things.

Charly fell in love with photography during a trip to Indonesia. Because Indonesia had so much ground for practice, his trip inspired him to dig deeper in photography and to understand the techniques required. This trained his eyes to see objects and people in a meticulous way. Charly quickly became obsessed, and photography became a great reason to seek out more adventures and discover new places.

Charly enjoys snapping photos of simple and beautiful things, like an old car on a driveway or a lonely tree at the top of a hill. He could spend an entire day looking for the perfect light. In fact, he shared that this weekend, he left the table in the middle of a family dinner because he wanted to catch the incredible sunset over the sea.

Charly especially enjoys travel photography. Most of the time, his photos are tightly connected to a feeling of escape and connection with nature. For him, photography is an escape from the stressful 9–5 work routine.

His most unforgettable moment happened last winter. He went on a road trip in California with his girlfriend, and he noticed abandoned trailer parks with wrecked cars along the road. He stopped to take a took. The scenery was perfect with a long cargo train passing through a little village at sunset. He wandered around and realized that he entered private property. He was finishing his film roll and noticed a massive dog running towards him. Suddenly, he was running full speed back to his car through a tiny village in the middle of the desert. Luckily, Charly reached the car before he became the dog’s dinner.

He’s a huge basketball fan and is always keen to try outdoor sports, whether it’s kayaking or surfing. He exclaims, “Unfortunately, Paris isn’t really the place for that!” As a result, he tries to get as many activities in while he’s traveling. He’d love to travel the world someday and make a full-time career out of photography. For now, nothing is set in stone, and he and his girlfriend will continue exploring as much as possible.
