2. Gang of Youths

“They gave me an injection in my arse, to sober me up. Which is hilarious, and humiliating. So debasing. So degrading.”

The month of September in 2016 is rolling by in a soon to be heatwave induced Australia. Scrolling through Facebook a video link obtaining an interview with David Le’Aupepe is going viral. The story of his hurt and where his passion burns from is going viral. Watching this and listening to the words from the horses mouth truly helps you to understand the passion behind Gang of Youths.

Although coming to the musical fore in 2012, it was 2014 that the bands first leap was taken note of. Releasing hit album, The Positions which featured Radioface, Strange Diseases & Magnolia it was apparently quite quickly this diverse group of gents weren’t the one hit wonders that so often grace Triple J.

2017 brought them a headliner spot at Laneway, following up their debut Splendour in the Grass appearance. But what we love about Dave’s live shows are the mistakes. So rarely do you see an artist make the hiccups. But Dave’s consistent show of passion and drive behind his lyrics mean he is pouring every last drop of himself into his work. “C’mon, make some fucking noise” he bellowed into the microphone at Splendour, only to hold his head in his hands and previously apologize for swearing seconds later.

Although recently moving their residence to London to support band member Jung Kim inability to obtain a visa, a move so admirable, the band confirmed this will not be closing the door on Australia.

“The reality is none of us want to leave Sydney but we just don’t have a choice,” Dave explained, “because we’re not going to let our boy flounder around in some American city by himself”
