Honey Spilled on the Internet

The most talked about sensation this week is Beyonce’s new album, ‘Lemonade’. Right after she released her album the “beyhive” started buzzing all over social media -articles say Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ stomped the internet into a million pieces- once she asked the question, “Are you cheating on me?” everyone became more intrigued in trying to decrypt who Queen B was reffering to.

Who is her husband cheating on her with? Who is he whispering to? Who’s sneaking out the back door? Who’s becky with the good hair? Whose face has she scratched out? Whose name has she scratched out? Who’s the bitch she’s going to fuck up?

Beyonce is well known for writing songs themed on her past experiences and also her relationship with rapper Jay-z that’s why more fans assume Jay-z has cheated. However, despite all these question that most of us do want an answer to -out of curiosity- Beyonce has not yet came forward to clear the assumptions made about her husband cheated on her, therefore, women have been accusing different women like Rita Ora and Rachel Roy for no reason. Jay-z and Beyonce are both smart business people and business is what all these cheating rumors can be. They both could have known that lyrics like “Next time you’ll lose your wife” would bring in more money for both of them. Or Beyonce could have just wanted to make these songs to connect with her fans in a deeper way. If people would pay more attention to her lyrics they would understand ‘Lemonade’ in the way it was meant to be seen and heard.

Beyonce’s album and visual are being misrepresented. It not longer represent the “unknown women.” It no longer represents the different black females in her videos. The black women in the video no longer represent the hard working women who were slaves. Women who want or have had their voice heard are having their voice taken away from them again because of misrepresentation. Her album is no longer representing women who are winners and have never gave up. It no longer represent women who want to lead their children into the future or women who are leaders overall. It no longer represents the women who want to be free from something or everything. Her video against police violence no longer has a greater meaning than any other.

Beyonce is a black woman who has broken into the music industry and up to today she has won 20 grammy awards. She has broken through walls along with other women to prove there is no such thing as “your typical black women”. She has been trying to prove that women should not be restricted on what they can talk about and how much of their body they should show. We are forgetting that Beyonce is not just an artist, mother, and wife but she is also an educated powerful black woman who stands up for other women, modern-day feminist. Unlike other artist through her music she gets different message across about love, empowerment, and female sexuality.

In her ‘Lemonade’ video the quote “I was served lemons so I made lemonade” is mention 51 minutes into the film. This quote is reflecting people who are optimistic and make the best out of every situation possible. It might take sometime but we need to figure out how to make something good out of the little things weare being given in life. ‘Lemonade’ is simply about overcoming hard times not cheating.

Fingers need to stop being pointed and people need to analyze both the lyrics and video a lot close.
