TLDR: Arranging for the same boring birthday cake for a fellow co-worker? Here is one idea to make it interesting!

Happy Birthday Poster on the Wall

For some days now the blocker on the calendar was staring at me. It reminded me that my employee’s birthday was due in the coming days. Birthday’s meant, go to a baker and choose an eggless cake (we are majorly, a vegetarian company) on display, tell the person behind the counter to personalize the birthday wish. Then take it to the workplace to celebrate along with the employee and rest of the team.

I knew the drill but it seemed a little dull this time around. And just then an idea stuck. I checked out the baker’s website for customized cakes and saw various interesting designs. One tab read, ‘Photo Cake’. On display were cakes of various children’s characters. From Lightning McQueen to Ben ten and from Cindarella to Elsa the Princess from the Frozen movie. Seeing these reminded me of a photo cake that my sister had ordered for my niece. The photo was my niece’s own drawing.

And so the hunt for the right picture started. The pics were all selfies and it seemed little outrageous to put the team’s own selfie on the cake. Even the logo was considered and flushed down the idea sink. And then an idea struck. Why not put the screenshot of the product feature that this employee created/contributed to. And so the screen shot was taken. A few tweaks were done. For e.g., (asset) ‘Depreciation’ was replaced with ‘Appreciation’.

Here it is.

A Product Feature Cake :)

And when the cake was unboxed, the employees were surprised to see a different take of the regular cake. Soon the surprise led to laughter and then images were clicked and shared with their friends. A small tweak to an otherwise regular birthday cake that created ripples of joy and laughter among the team.

P.S: Now a bigger task lies ahead. What to print on a backend developer’s birthday cake? Any ideas?
