RETURNING
Returning home is rough and wild
At times we are again a child
Encoded through our family ways
Ignited patterns start to blaze
A comment here, an action there
The flush of joy turns to despair
The stories come up once again
The feelings rush from nought to ten
It’s all a lesson for the soul
That asks to find where you are whole
Unbroken, centred, full, complete
The part of you that’s soft and sweet
The part that doesn’t hold a grudge
The part that gives a gentle nudge
Toward the act of letting go
The part that is designed to flow.
That flowing wakens up the heart
Compassion joins and makes a start
To find the kindest, softest way
To stop the train of thoughts today
A glimmer, like a flame at night
Brings with it peace and something bright
A shiny, glowing, blossoming hope
That maybe, this time you can cope
And more than that, that you can be
A soothing balm with family
And this comes easy when its known
YOU are the keeper of your home.

This was written a few weeks after I had returned home to Australia after seven years away. It was a time intended to be a celebration of my 60th and a time of rest and renewal. To an extent those things did happen — unexpectedly though it was also a time of navigating change, loss, the realities of ageing and other people’s sorrows. A reality check. And some old patterns were even more visible.
It seems to me that the enthusiastic youthful part of us says YES to life’s adventures; whilst the wise, old soul part needs to show up for the lessons that are created by that YES. Even age 60 I am still learning this — maybe that’s perfect too.
