Before we knew it, our time had come to leave for the road trip! Kelsey came to pick me up (5 hours out of her way round trip…BLESS HER SOUL) and we headed to Sacramento to spend one last night in California before kicking off the road trip.

First thing in the morning (6AM) we woke up, made some breakfast and hit the road, but not before stopping at Dutch Bros (for those of you who have never heard of or been to a Dutch Bros, it’s only the most delicious coffee stand!)

I have a habit of dangerously pulling off the side of the road for photos with the state signs. For the most part, we were able to get photos with most of the state signs (aside from the ones where the sign is on a bridge or overhanging sign). That being said, our first stop on the first leg of our trip was at the California-Nevada border only to be followed by the Nevada — Utah border!

After hours upon hours of driving, we finally arrived at one of the lesser planned stops, the Utah Salt Flats! I’m not sure how much you know about the Bonneville Salt Flats, but I’ll give you a brief history lesson.

The Bonneville Salt Flats were created when, what was formerly Lake Bonneville, dried up, leaving massive pockets of dried up salt. At one point the lake filled a large portion of the Great Basin and was part of what we know now to be The Great Salt Lake. We spent just about two hours sitting and admiring the beauty that was before us. Before we knew it, the sun started to set and we brought out the rest of our Subway sandwiches to have an impromptu picnic dinner.

The only reason we stopped at the Bonneville Salt Flats was because of an Instagram post I had seen from a girl I barely knew back in high school, but words can’t describe how glad I am that I remembered it. The “quick stop” quickly turned into one of the best decisions we made on the trip and was easily the perfect ending to a long first day of driving.

Thanks for reading and I’ll post the next update soon!
