The Heroin Capital of California

This past weekend a few of my oldest girlfriends and I took a weekend getaway to Clearlake, CA. It has been a place I’ve heard about since I was 5 years old because my two girlfriends used to go when we were growing up and for whatever reason I never joined them. After years of envisioning this lake, I finally got to go!

So, after a loooonnnngg (just kidding, it was a pretty mellow day) at work, I threw my clothes in a carry on bag and drove over to my friend Jessica’s house. The entire reason we were going up was for her 23rd birthday which means about 18 years of friendship for us! So we quickly packed the car, stopped for Starbucks, and then took a long detour shopping for beer and wine. What was supposed to be a simple 3 1/2 hour drive, turned into about a 5 hour drive up because of our detour for dinner and Jess’ slow driving on the windy roads, which is my worst nightmare.

Finally, we got up to the lake and as we pulled up to the lakehouse, it was pitch black and we could’t help but not want to get out of the car. Right as we finally muster up the courage to walk into the pitch black house, we see a light turn on and all proceed to pee our pants. We spring back into the car and lock the doors faster than you can say “this is how a horror movie starts!”. The four of us are packed in the car and wait for Brooke’s uncle to pick up the phone to tell us why the light turned on. Does the light have a motion sensor? Does anyone else have a key? WHY DID IT JUST TURN ON?!

As it turns out, the light is on a timer set for 10:45PM and we just happened to pull up just in the nick of time to see the house turn from pitch black to having the light on. Talk about awful timing! We finally came to our senses and made our way down the stairs and let ourselves into the house to begin a weekend of shenanigans!

The next morning we started with mimosas and spent all morning relaxing on the deck that overlooks the golf course. We then took a stroll down to the lake where two of the girls hopped in the water (freezing). After the lake, we drove over to a Mexican restaurant for dinner, came home and then watched A Chorus Line.

All in all it was a quick trip away, but was refreshing to be in nature with incredibly limited cell service. It was so great to catch up with old friends (we have all known each other since we were 5) and take a weekend to nurture our friendship.
