David: So after a bit of a PW hiatus, we’re happily bringing you Potable Wednesday on a bright Sunday morning!

Kate: Don’t worry, this week’s Potable Wednesday doesn’t have booze so it’s totally kosher for 10am. In fact, it’s kind of perfect timing since this week’s drink is a hang-over cure.

David: …or possibly just an energy drink. It’s kind of difficult to know for sure exactly what Bacchus-D is meant to do. The only really safe thing to say is that it’s one of many many energy-health-drinks that are offered in almost every convenience store.

Kate: This particular drink was offered to us last week by a friendly stranger at the Heuksando Ferry Office.

David: Not as sketchy as it sounds…

David: …actually, maybe very sketchy since I’m looking on Wikipedia and it looks like Bacchus-D is a defunct drink that a company called “Dong-A Pharmaceuticals” stopped manufacturing 12 years ago…

Kate:

David:

Kate: Well. It isn’t like that kind of thing goes bad, really. Right?

David: …one hopes not.

Kate: Anyway. Bacchus-D, in case you should ever stumble across any, tastes an awful lot like Red Bull. And actually, you do run a pretty good chance of encountering it if you were ever to visit Korea as Dong-A Pharmaceuticals still manufactures a Bacchus drink, now known as Bacchus-F.

David: So, everything else aside, it’s really very difficult to overstate how ubiquitous these drinks are. When I have meetings over at the Ministry of Finance we’re almost always offered a Bacchus drink. And, actually, it doesn’t taste too bad — I agree it’s very much like Red Bull.

Grade: Kate = C David = B

Bacchus only comes in 3oz bottles
