I had a conversation last week with a neuroscientist friend about how we form opinions and how we act on those opinions. I tend to think introspectively and logically about what seems right. And yet, my actions don’t always reflect what I believe. Does it come from a place of laziness? Selfishness? Does it come from experiencing different circumstances and realizing that how we feel in those circumstances differs from where logic should have led us? One thing my friend said particularly piqued my interest:

People act based on emotion. We try to rationalize — in retrospect — but [our actions are] far less rational than we think [they are].

Why are we hypocrites? Where is that disconnect? Is emotion a blocker of logic? Or is it vice-versa? Are our opinions and thoughts informed by logic, and our actions informed by visceral feelings? Is that the source of hypocrisy?
