Some of my least favorite phrases growing up were “I’ll tell you when you’re older” and “You’ll understand one day.” However, I’ve become sufficiently convinced that, indeed, some things you cannot even begin to understand without going through them yourself— fighting in a war, experiencing a famine, living in poverty. While not as dramatic, but perhaps as life changing — becoming a parent falls into this category, as well. However, providing no explanation to legitimate questions causes confusion. Yes, you can’t expect to receive a complete response or expect to fully empathize, but getting an idea of the “why” and having some amount of faith can go a long way in filling the void.
