while(self++) { #42 } // Breaking Down Snapchat Streaks
A streak on Snapchat is a phenomenon that begins after sending at least one snap a day to the same person for multiple days in a row. It’s a rush when it starts, and when that 🔥 reaches 10, then 50, then 100, it can be exhilarating! And it begs the question — at which point does it become less about maintaining contact with friends and more about getting to that next big number? When does it lose its meaning? When does the focus go away?
This question reminds me of this daily series, in a way. Will writing a post a day for while(self++) ever become a habit that I begin to despise? I’ve been grappling with these thoughts recently. The goal has always been self improvement through reflecting about the world, with writing as the medium. I’ve come to the conclusion that, when it’s not too big of a risk, you shouldn’t do anything that no longer brings you joy. Perhaps we can apply the same principle to Snapchat streaks.
