Today is Christmas! (Duh, Simon.) I received a bunch of messages from friends wishing me a Merry Christmas, and of course, I wished them the same back, even if I don’t celebrate it myself. It’s interesting that Christmas Eve and the start of Hanukkah fell on the same day this year. We took out our menorah the same day that kids everywhere expectantly awaited Santa. One entire group of people celebrates one holiday, another celebrates a different one, and yet others pass these days just like normal ones. But all of us are united in our celebration and our mourning — if on different days of the year, for different reasons, based on different historical contexts, with different levels of religiosity (if any at all). There’s so much to learn from other people and cultures, not just from our own. No one has a monopoly on wisdom. Let’s explore what we don’t know from others.
