Some people’s music tastes can be described as liking mushroom pineapple pizza and others’ as liking Japanese food. More transparently, do you enjoy specific songs or entire genres? Most people specify the latter when people ask, but the reality is probably closer to a mix of both. You might prefer jazz, but that doesn’t mean that you like all jazz music, much like you may not like all Italian food. You may also like a specific hip hop song, but not hip hop in general.

Personally, I’m a mushroom pineapple pizza kind of guy. I have a very vague idea of genres I enjoy, so I tend to favor explaining my tastes with specific songs. Spotify is golden in this regard. I create playlists based on emotions I want to feel (e.g., emotional, excited, etc.) and add specific songs that I find through exploration to the playlist that best matches the invoked feeling. What have I been listening to recently? The Hamilton and Interstellar soundtracks. And a personally crafted playlist called Dance — 58 tracks and counting since September of last year. Because sometimes, all you want to do is DANCE.
