while(self++) { #91 } // Plotless Pieces
When I read books and watch films, I (usually) need a compelling plot to rope me in. Otherwise, I get bored quite easily. Today, I watched Moonlight, and I had zero expectations/knowledge about it in advance. The story’s realness makes it emotionally gripping. In a way, the plot was clearly laid out for the audience; it has a beginning, middle, and end that is cinematically partitioned into book-like chapters, with each section representing a distinct period in the protagonist’s life. In another sense, there was no plotline at all. The character was made beautifully three dimensional, but it didn’t quite feel like there was any buildup. Somewhat like real life. And it felt essential to the core of the film. Ultimately, I wouldn’t say that Moonlight makes it as my favorite movie, but I would enthusiastically suggest it to anyone who wants to deeply delve into another’s life and understand who they are. It’s the kind of film that gives you vision through another’s eyes.
