A friend of mine sent me an interesting link about relationship anarchy, or as Wikipedia eloquently puts it:

[The] practice of forming relationships that are not bound by rules aside from what the people involved mutually agree on.

It’s always occurred to me that how people conduct themselves with one another — so long as there is consent and no power imbalance (or as little as possible, realistically) — should be solely up to them. Especially when it comes to relationships. Most modern “should-be’s” regarding relationships arise out of social norms with their own historical trajectories. Monogamy is a norm that our society happens to champion, but the reality is that there are other viable relationship configurations. Polyamory. Open relationships. Relationship anarchy. I do think that it can be more complicated, but that hasn’t stopped people from doing it. Nor should it. “Non-traditional” relationship configurations can fail, but since when has monogamy been able to claim a 100% success rate anyway? At the end of the day, it’s about communication and honesty, no matter which way you slice it.
