Today, in a celebration of the one year anniversary of announcing the 2017 opening roster, the Dust Devils announced their 2018 opening roster.

In their announcement, the Dust Devils confirmed what we already knew, which is that pretty soon, this announcement will be outdated:

The Dust Devils are expected to receive additional players this week from the 2018 MLB Draft, which took place June 4–6.

This can be translated roughly as: “Look, it was just a week ago. We don’t know which players from the 2018 draft will be on the team yet. Hell, not all of them have even been signed yet. Please hold your horses, children!”

It might be more appropriate to imagine a silently implied “for goshydarn’s sake” appended to the end:

The Dust Devils are expected to receive additional players this week from the 2018 MLB Draft, which took place June 4–6, for goshydarn’s sake.

This just seems to be the way things go, isn’t it?

Team makes a roster announcement. Team makes another roster announcement. And another. And another. And on and on it goes until the earth is engulfed in the flames of the dying sun. Really makes one wonder what the point of all of this is. Why not just say, “Baseball is being played during this epoch by some people within your vicinity and for that you should be very grateful”? Now that would be an announcement worth noting.

But in this announcement there were some things worth noting—things which, in fact, were noted by the Dust Devils. I’ll note them for you here in case you haven’t just clicked on the announcement link.

In addition to returning players Luis Asuncion, Tre Carter, and Aldemar Burgos, some of the noteable baseballmen to be included on this year’s opening roster, um, include:

And for the second year straight, the Dust Devils welcome to their team one of the greatest names in baseball, Henry Henry.

With the opening roster announced, I’ll be diving into player previews. Because we all have to find something to do while we wait for the sun to crash into the earth, right?
