When we talk about the environment and the actions that everyone can take to preserve our planet, there is no better time than to start doing something right away. At Whirlpool, we strongly believe that even the smallest steps towards a more sustainable world can make a difference and that is why we decided to promote the #PlasticLess initiative in partnership with LifeGate.

#PlasticLess is an innovative and ambitious project that aims at reducing the amount of plastics in our seas through the installation of Seabins, floating rubbish bins able to collect plastics, microplastics and microfibers from our seas. Each Seabin can collect up to 500 kg of plastic waste per year which can be reused and repurposed.

Whirlpool EMEA embraced the #PlasticLess project responding to the challenge of freeing our seas from waste in a proactive and concrete manner. We decided to install two Seabins in the Italian ports of Fano and San Benedetto del Tronto. We chose the Marche region because of our office and manufacturing facilities, as well as our long-standing ties with the local community. We are honored to be able to contribute to bring real benefits to these communities where the sea is a crucial asset for their development and wellbeing.

Caring for the future of our planet is part of our responsibilities: although the European home appliance sector uses just 0.5% of the world’s plastic production, we believe that, as a world-leading corporation, it’s our duty to commit on a daily basis to guaranteeing the best possible future for our planet and for future generations.

The idea of creating a virtuous circular economy system permeate all our actions. In June, we successfully responded to the EU Commission’s invitation to come forward with voluntary pledges to reduce plastic waste in the framework of the Plastic Strategy:, we agreed with our industry partners to ensure the adoption of 100% recycled plastic solutions for components of our products by 2025.

Everyone can choose what battle to fight, but if we want to do something concrete to preserve our planet for future generations, there is no better way than start taking small — but significant — actions.
