What’s new in the world of crypto?

Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Apple, and others hacked in an unprecedented Twitter attack

🔲 The Twitter accounts of major companies and individuals have been compromised in one of the most widespread and confounding hacks the platform has ever seen.

🔲 It was all in service of promoting a Bitcoin scam that appears to be earning its creators quite a bit of money.

🔲 Twitter has confirmed it took the drastic step of blocking new tweets from every verified user, compromised or no, as well as locking all compromised accounts.

🔲 Twitter says it won’t restore access to their owners “until we are certain we can do so securely.”

🔲 On Wednesday evening, the company revealed that its own internal employee tools were compromised and used in the hack, which may explain why even accounts that claimed to have two-factor authentication were still attempting to fool followers with the Bitcoin scam.

A Village in El Salvador Created a Bitcoin-Friendly Economy Amid COVID-19

🔲 El Zonte, a village located in El Salvador, was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

🔲 In response, the community implemented an economic system based in Bitcoin (BTC).

🔲 According to a report published by Forbes, the community’s BTC-powered economy began to take hold after an anonymous donor gave a multi-year, six-figure donation to El Zonte in early 2019.

🔲 Residents started to adopt Bitcoin as a local alternative to conventional financial solutions after their tourism sector was decimated by the pandemic.

🔲 The article details that Bitcoin owners are able to use crypto to pay for anything in the town, including utility bills “and tacos.”

Human Rights Foundation to Help Activists Protect Their Bitcoin Funds

🔲 The HRF, a major global organization promoting democracy and freedom, continues to explore the use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) as a way to protect human rights around the world.

🔲 The HRF recently partnered with crypto custody startup Casa to help global activists effectively protect crypto funds used to fight human rights abuses and challenge authoritarianism.

🔲 As part of the new collaboration, Casa will be working with the HRF to educate non-profit organizations or NGOs, and activists about Bitcoin.

🔲 The new initiative is intended to address the financial difficulties faced by societies ruled by authoritative regimes.

🔲 NGOs often find it difficult to access traditional banking services. By promoting the use of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, the HRF and Casa are hoping to help activists raise their funds in a secure way.

Zcash Latest Hard Fork ‘Heartwood’ Makes Mining Private

🔲 Privacy coin Zcash has successfully hard forked in the planned network update “Heartwood.”

🔲 With the update, miners can receive coinbase transactions right to a private address, in addition to other new features.

🔲 The hard fork occurred on July 16 at 10:58 UTC at block height 903,000, according to the Electric Coin Company (ECC), the for-profit development house behind the project.

🔲 As a hard fork, the updates are backward-incompatible, meaning all nodes must sync to the new software in order to use the Zcash blockchain.

🔲 Heartwood is the privacy coin’s fourth hard fork since the network launched in late 2016. Zcash last hard forked in December 2019 with “Blossom.”

Stay tuned for more!
