One of the fears that so many people have when venturing out to build their first startup is that if you share your idea with anyone, they will steal it and beat you to the punch. Well, I have news for you. No one cares about your idea and no one is going to steal it. Tell as many people as possible, the more the better!

I mean, let’s think about it, the only people that are going to “steal” your idea are the ones that actually have the motivation to get up and make something happen. Lucky for you, those individuals aren’t sitting around waiting for someone to tell them a good idea to steal, they are building ideas of their own! So the people that are left, are the individuals that talk and dream all day but don’t have the energy to execute, not even on their own ideas, so there is no need to worry about them stealing yours.

In addition to that, no one cares about your idea until you prove that your idea has value. In order for that to happen, you have to build it and make some noise, not just have a concept in your head. If and when that time comes, you are already ahead of the game. Now the key is to run faster than the copycats, because if you really do have something valuable and you prove it, there will be those out there wanting to imitate you.

If you do get in a situation though that someone is going to ‘steal’ your idea, well I wouldn’t worry much. Why? First, what is worrying going to do besides take attention away from what you need to be doing? Second, if they don’t have a passion for the idea, they aren’t going to see it through. Those that pursue their dreams have to have a passion for what they are doing and have to be willing to dredge through the dark days of building a venture, yes there will be many. The ones that aren’t passionate will die long before they see the fruit of their labor because they were doing it for other motives, such as thinking they will get rich quick.

With that being said, share your ideas with everyone. The more people you share it with the better. By sharing your ideas, you will learn if it is actually something people will want. It will also give you feedback and insight on how to improve upon your idea. People love to share their opinions and it is to your advantage, so gobble it up!

By your sharing your idea, it is the first step in validation or rejection. The last thing you want to do is go months down the road, invest time and money into something and then realize it isn’t going to work out. Now get out there and share your ideas.
