One of the most important quests for survival when it comes to launching and building a tech startup is finding product market fit. I am sure the same applies to any vertical or industry, but it seems to be more dominant when it comes to technology.

You hear it over and over again of how critical it is to find your product market fit in order to survive. It is the “honey hole” per se, where users stick to you and it is so sweet! It seems to be a struggle for many to find product market fit and they end up dying before they reach their sweet spot. A big reason they don’t find their product market fit is because people build products that don’t provide value or solve a real problem. On the flip side, for the companies that do have an opportunity, they struggle to find product market fit because they are not doing one of the simplest things possible…

People that are using your product will guide you to product market fit.

I have spoken with dozens of startups that are feverishly trying to find their fit before they end up in the dead-pool. Could it really be that hard? To start, you can target like-minded individuals that potentially share the same problem. More importantly though, what so many are overlooking and not doing is one of the best ways to find product market fit — listening to your users.

People that are using your product will guide you to product market fit. Yes, I believe it is that simple! The hard part that many cannot overcome is soliciting for feedback and hearing at times that your baby is ugly. But if you take the time and listen, users will let you know why it doesn’t stick for them, why it does stick and what needs to be done in order for it to be even sticker. Now the hard part comes into play, taking the feedback you have received and actually doing something with it.

For the individuals that are saying your product is amazing and they are retaining, direct your marketing efforts and messaging more towards that demographic then test the waters and see if you are hearing an increase of love and praises. Continue to polish your messaging for this market and evolving your product to where it is as sticky as possible for the greatest number of individuals.

When it comes to feature requests and adjustments to the product, everyone will have their two cents but the items that matter the most will always be evident and rise to the top. Address the most requested updates and in return, you will appeal to the needs of the greatest number of users. Don’t worry about the edge cases until they become a common consensus.

Continue to diligently listen to your users and act upon their feedback and it will only be a matter a time until you find your golden product market fit… or you will learn quickly that what you are doing is a waste of your time : )
