Introduction

Sophomore Jacob Farrell won second place in Varsity IPDA finals at an Oklahoma University forensics tournament in February. Farrell plans to use his success and experiences in debate as a stepping stone towards Stanford Law.

Farrell attended Cedar Park Christian, a small Christian high school in Bothell, WA, and played varsity football there. He is on the smaller side but his mind is large. He felt he could be successful if he left football behind. He took on a passion for debate and law.

Farrell joined the Whitworth University forensics team his freshmen year and has made an immediate impact. His coach, Mike Ingram, has been the coach of the Forensics team since 2011. He was hired to take over and bring the team back to its high standards.

“He is an amazing coach,” Farrell said. “I really appreciate that he pushes me to my furthest extent and really forces me to try different things in debate.”

I asked Ingram to talk about Farrell and he had nothing but praise for him, from his ability to debate to his ability of being a teammate.

“Jacob is very bright, he enjoys argumentation and intellectual topics and does really well,” Ingram said. “As a teammate, he helps a lot when we travel and pack up and is overall a great teammate.

The Ultimate Goal

Farrell is an aspiring law student as he thoroughly enjoys politics and law. Being a part of the Whitworth forensics team is preparing him to achieve his goal of Stanford Law.

Stanford Law is ranked in the top three law schools in the country. Attending Stanford is no slouch.

Farrell shared his thoughts on why he wants to attend Stanford Law.

The test you need to take to get into Law School is called the LSAT. A good score for most schools is a 160, maximum score being 180. For GPA, most median schools have a requirement of at least a 3.0, maximum GPA being a 4.0.

For more information on how tough it is see the chart below.

You can see just how hard it is when comparing it to national averages and what is actually considered good around the nation. Stanford is just a step above when it comes to GPA and LSAT scores.

I asked his friend and old teammate Gabe Oros to shed some light on Farrell and his goal of law school. Once again, it was all praise.

There is no doubt that work ethic needs to be there to manage being on the forensics team and still be pursuing Stanford Law.

“I love the grind and I would not trade it for anything else,” Farrell said.
