The self-portrait is an ancient art form. It rose to popularity in the Renaissance with society’s shift in focus to the individual. Throughout the history of the discipline, artists have searched for innovative ways to represent the self. From the strange visions of Frida Kahlo to the massive, intricate portraits of Chuck Close, many contemporary painters have defined themselves by their portraits.
