How does a culture where nothing is wasted looks alike? What are its characteristics? Perhaps a more pressing question, how do we create a culture where nothing is wasted? This is the key question that we are looking into, which emerged during co-presencing. With we, I mean Max Lauritzen and myself, two final year students at the business-design school Kaospilot, in Denmark. This question forms the foundation of our final year project, where we have the opportunity to fully emerge ourselves in this field.

What do we mean with “where nothing is wasted?” Our biggest source of inspiration is the natural ecosystem, where every node plays an intrinsic role within the larger system. We wonder if we can replicate this process in our society. Our assumption is that, if it’s possible, then culture must be the fabric that enables this collective process.

Right now, we’re in the midst of exploring this field. Our prototypes have the focus to help us narrow down the vastness of this field into a concrete challenge that we will then co-explore with our fellow collaborators. Since nature is collaborative, we’ve chosen to make our journey co-creative.

Prototype 1: “Wholegraphics”: the name of our online journal that depicts our final year journey. Its main aim is to stay connected with people who are supportive towards the field we’re emerging into: to hear their comments and feedback, and to co-create new chapters within this journey. https://medium.com/whole-graphics

Prototype 2: Culture Lab: we will use social lab as the main format to conduct strategic conversations with a diversity of stakeholders about culture. The main aim is to concretize a common challenge, connect with the right people, find resources and a define a common strategic direction. First stop: Culture LabxStockholm. Potential other stops: Culture LabxAarhus, Culture LabxBrussels. http://www.social-labs.com

Prototype 3: art exhibition: following James Baldwin’s insight that the purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers, we would like to use art not only as a mean to share our insights, but to challenge them, look at them through different sources of knowing, and invite others into this process. First exhibition: Museum of Now: 29 Oct 2015.

Some tactic questions we want to explore are:

  • What levels of culture are we talking about?
  • What are the key drivers behind a culture?
  • What’s the relationship between culture and our internal model of reality?
  • What are the system conditions for a zero waste culture?
