6 Mindfulness Techniques for Non-Meditators

Many of us want to live more mindfully. We sense that there is more to life beyond our everyday routines, beyond “adulting” and endlessly crossing stuff off of a to-do list. Beneath it all, we can sense a deeper meaning and a more peaceful way for us to exist. And we want to learn how to access it.

Meditation is one of the best-known ways to tap into that inner peace and a grounded, present-moment awareness — which is really the goal of mindfulness practice. Most of us have heard about how powerful and life-changing meditation can be.

But meditation is only one way to be mindful — and even as a former meditation and yoga instructor myself, I can’t tell you that it’s always the way. Sitting in silence may not be helpful or even accessible for some people. And if you struggle with any type of mental illness, it might even exacerbate distorted thought patterns and leave you feeling worse.

Meditation can do wonders, but there are other, equally valid ways of practicing mindfulness, and you might find that some of them work better for you. If meditation does work for you, great! But if you need to experiment with other ways of accessing that state of presence…
