The date was March 12th, etched forever in my memory.

I received the devastating phone call that my beloved friend Yusuf, whom I’ve known since childhood, had died in a tragic accident.

In an instant, my world shattered — the unimaginable had happened.

Yusuf and I were brothers in every way except blood.

Growing up together in our small hometown, we were inseparable — getting into mischief and playing carefree cricket games in the streets from dawn until our mothers furiously called us in for dinner.

How resoundingly his joyful laughter would echo, even on my darkest days, brightening my spirits without fail.

We had adventures during the day and dreams under the stars at night. With every milestone and hardship, we were there for each other.

We’ve both found our soul mates and started families.

We spent less time together, but our bond stayed the same.

The news that Yusuf had passed, merely three months after his wedding, shook me to my core.

I felt as though a vortex opened within me, consumed by grief and disbelief that he was truly gone.

My dearest friend, who had been my pillar for decades, was preparing to start his own family — how could he be taken so soon?

Six months have passed, yet barely a moment goes by without Yusuf in my thoughts.

I still find myself turning to tell him a joke, ready to dial his number to share the news before the emptiness returns.

A piece of my heart felt frozen in time when it was still whole.

Yet as the years continue without my trusted brother in my arms, I find solace in knowing Yusuf lives on through our nearly lifelong friendship legacy.

Through my memories, through the stories we will tell our children to keep rekindling his bright spirit. Though the boundaries of life may temporarily separate us, a bond as valid as ours defies even the veil between worlds.

I know we will laugh together again one day beyond earthly barriers.

I’ll keep celebrating Yusuf’s legacy within me until that day comes.
